Choose what you want to collect
You might collect a favorite Pokémon, complete sets, Illustration Rares, promos, vintage cards, graded cards, or artwork from a particular illustrator. Choosing a focus helps prevent every new release from feeling like something you have to buy.
Learn the set and card number
The card name alone is often not enough to identify a Pokémon card. Look at the set and collector number. These details help distinguish cards with similar artwork or names and make searching for specific singles much easier.
Understand rarity
Modern Pokémon releases contain several rarity categories. Because rarity systems have changed across different eras and languages, identify cards using the terminology associated with their particular set rather than assuming every set follows the same system.
Protect your collection
At minimum, valuable or important cards should be handled carefully and sleeved. Depending on your collection, you may also use binders, top loaders, semi-rigid holders, or graded slabs. Keep cards away from moisture, excessive heat, and direct sunlight.
Packs vs. singles
Opening packs is part of the fun, but buying singles lets you target a specific card. Many collectors use both approaches: open products for the experience and buy singles to fill gaps in a collection.
