One of the biggest collecting decisions is whether to buy the exact single you want or spend the same money on sealed products. Both can be enjoyable, but they offer very different experiences.
Singles give you certainty
When you buy a single, you know which card you are receiving. That makes singles efficient for set completion, character collections, deck building, or buying a specific artwork.
Sealed products give you the opening experience
Packs and boxes offer surprise and entertainment. The tradeoff is randomness. Opening a product does not guarantee that the cards inside will match the amount you spent.
Budget changes the answer
If your goal is one $20 card, buying that card directly can be easier to budget than opening several packs hoping to pull it. If the experience of opening is the main goal, sealed can make more sense even when the expected singles value is uncertain.
Storage and space matter
Raw singles fit efficiently in binders and boxes. Sealed products can take up more room and require protection if you intend to keep them unopened.
Many collectors use both
A balanced approach can work well: open some product for fun, then buy singles to fill the gaps. The important part is knowing whether you are paying for a guaranteed card or for the experience and randomness of opening.
